The Herfador Lounge Unleashed

V-Cut vs Guillotine

For cigar lovers, the choice between a V-cut and a guillotine cut is more than just a matter of preference, it’s a decision that shapes the smoking experience. Each cut has its loyalists, and both offer distinct advantages and potential drawbacks. Whether you’re looking for a bold, concentrated draw or a smooth, open one, knowing the differences can elevate your cigar enjoyment.

The V-cut, also known as the wedge cut, creates a deep V-shaped notch in the cigar’s cap. This design directs smoke through a more focused channel, resulting in a richer and more concentrated draw. It’s a favorite for those who enjoy a fuller flavor profile without overwhelming airflow. However, the V-cut can be tricky, too deep a cut risks damaging the cigar’s structure, leading to unraveling or excessive tar buildup at the cut’s edges.

On the other hand, the guillotine cut, or straight cut, provides a straight, clean slice across the cap-offers a broader opening, allowing for maximum airflow and an easy draw. This method works well with larger ring gauge cigars, ensuring an effortless and even burn. Yet, with this freedom comes a downside: a poorly executed guillotine cut can cause excessive unraveling, and an overly deep cut may lead to loose tobacco in the mouth, disrupting the experience.

Ultimately, choosing between a V-cut and a guillotine cut depends on personal preference and the specific cigar at hand. A seasoned smoker may tailor the cut to the cigar’s size and blend, while a novice might experiment to discover what best enhances their smoking experience. In the grand tradition of cigars, there’s no right or wrong, only the pursuit of the perfect draw.

Cigar Lounge Crimes

A cigar lounge is more than just a place to light up, it’s a sanctuary, a brotherhood and sisterhood of people who come together to relax, converse, and enjoy the craft of a well-rolled cigar. But if you’re new to the lounge scene, or even if you’ve been around the block a few times, there are some unwritten rules you need to follow. Here are the top five things you absolutely should not do if you want to keep your seat and your reputation intact.

1. Don’t Lick Your Cigar Before Using a Shared Cutter

This should go without saying, but here we are. Nobody wants to unknowingly swap saliva with you because you slobbered all over your cigar before using the community cutter. It’s unsanitary, it’s inconsiderate, and it’s downright nasty. If you must moisten the cap for your own ritualistic reasons, use your own cutter. Trust me, no one at the lounge signed up for an unintentional spit-sharing club.

2. Don’t Bring Your Own Cigars Without Buying from the Lounge

We get it, you have a prized stash of cigars that you love. But unless the lounge explicitly allows it, don’t waltz in with your personal collection without supporting the house. Cigar lounges make their money from cigar sales, not just from providing you with a comfy leather chair and a place to puff. If you value the lounge’s existence, buy something. Otherwise, you’re just taking up space and being that guy.

3. Don’t Put Your Feet on the Furniture

This isn’t your living room. Nobody wants to see your scuffed-up soles propped up on the lounge’s fine leather couches. It’s a basic respect thing. Who raised you? If you need to stretch out, be mindful of the space and the furniture. Feet belong on the floor… or in the air, but that’s a conversation for another time.

4. Don’t Sniff the Cigar Before You Buy It

We all appreciate the aroma of a fine cigar, but let’s keep those nostrils at a respectful distance until after the purchase. Nobody wants to light up a stick that’s been marinated in your nasal breath. If you’re curious about a cigar’s scent, ask the tobacconist for guidance instead of treating the humidor like your personal scent-testing station.

5. Don’t Steal Lighters

There’s a special kind of shame reserved for lighter bandits. People invest good money in their butane torches, and the last thing anyone wants is to see theirs mysteriously vanish. Accidentally pocketing a lighter happens, but if you make a habit of it, you’ll find yourself on the receiving end of some serious bombastic side-eye, or worse. Be a gentleman or a lady, return what isn’t yours, and keep the peace.

The cigar lounge is a place of camaraderie, relaxation, and respect. Follow these simple rules, and you’ll always have a seat in the circle. Break them, and you may find yourself puffing alone in exile.
